Rodri to Real Madrid: How will Man City and Enzo Maresca cope without the Premier League's best central midfielder if he moves?

Real Madrid chiefs clearly took a keen interest in this summer's World Cup. So much so that it has motivated them to move for Spain's prize midfielder Rodri a year earlier than they had planned.

The Manchester City metronome would have been available for free in 12 months. They want him now. And the feeling appears to be mutual.

Back in March, Rodri told a Spanish radio show about his desire to return to LaLiga, adding: "You can't turn down the best clubs in the world". City have been open about their wish for Rodri to stay and sign an improved deal, but the former Atletico Madrid player has his heart set on a reunion with his city of birth.

Los Blancos' interest in him is long-standing and his performances for Spain, their understated superstar, have compelled them to move sooner rather than later. Jose Mourinho wants experienced campaigners in his spine and Rodri is one of those rare breeds that has won the lot.
